I can't help but feel there is a deeper eschatological element underlying the situation, it is certainly hard to articulate but the importance of Jerusalem in this context cannot be overstated.
The "two-state solution" has always been fake, something cynically designed for gullible white people in the West, just like the "peace process." An excellent book to get up to speed on this stuff is Ilan Pappé's Ten Myths About Israel. The only progressive solution is a single secular state with everyone living together with the full right of return for refugees, from the river to the sea.
Nice article, Keith. I think it's obvious that the only way to resolve this conflict is through projecting power onto Israel, not just from the United States but also China and Russia. With the damage the Israelis did in Gaza, there's no way the USA by itself is going to get Israel to help rebuild Gaza (Unless it's for Jews), or get other countries in the region to help. There's also the issue of the Jewish lobby but that's a separate story

If Israel wants to survive in the coming decades as American Power declines inexorably, it should be now trying to make amends with the Arabs. And even if the US manages to keep their power intact, Israel support in the US will fatally decline as the boomers start dying.
Israels future looks bleak. Their economy is in a sad state, and as the Ultra-Orthodox become more dominant, we can expect the more progressive elements of the society who run the high-tech industry to flee for greener fields abroad, further tanking the economy. It is pretty hard to keep an economy running when your population is composed of people who think that they should be paid by the government to make kids and study the talmud. As the economy tanks, financing for the IDF will decrease, at the same time when Iran's is becoming more robust.
