The German attempt to use this as an excuse to rearm shows this issue will go wrong for Britain eventually. We may at some point have to rearm against Germany. And if the EU becomes a military alliance and insists that Ireland joins in with that, and the French/Germans seek to station troops in Ireland, the UK government may have to consider occupying Ireland and snuffing out Irish independence once and for all... That is what happens when geopolitics becomes more fraught and more countries seek to emerge from under US hegemony. It will eventually become a free-for-all. Ireland should tread carefully - but it is in not in their nature to do so.
